I recently found that there is a new expansion mod for HoMM 3 called Horn of the Abyss which is not official but instead written by a team of enthusiast who reverse engineered the Shadow of Death expansion mod and the result is amazing. This is what 3DO should have done back in the days to keep the game alive.
Not sure if I can post links to Horn of the Abyss here but a google search will get you to the official site of the team behind it. There are new towns Cove and Factory and a new one Bulwark coming soon. There are also new heroes, new campaigns and new map objects.
In order to install Horn of the Abyss you need a preferably clean non modded Heroes 3 Shadow of Death or Complete Edition and some googling later I found the Complete Edition is on a 75% off deal from Ubisoft directly until 4th of March 1000am Ubisoft bought the Heroes series from 3DO.
